About The Department

The Department of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics is the second-oldest aerospace engineering program in the country. Flight pioneer Orville Wright played a key role in its formation, and Neil Armstrong, the first person on the Moon, was a faculty member. The department maintains strong ties with government research centers and the aerospace industry, both locally and nationally. The Department offers a fully ABET-accredited five-year B.S. degree in aerospace engineering with a mandatory coop program and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in both Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics. In addition, the Department has an Accelerated Engineering Degree (ACCEND) program where highly motivated students can get both B.S. and M.S. or B.S. and M.B.A. degrees in five (5) years and a semester. The Department has research focus areas in Controls & Dynamics, Fluids, Combustion & Propulsion, and Solids & Structural Dynamics, supported by nationally recognized laboratory facilities. Job Overview

The Department of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics (AEEM) in the College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS) at the University of Cincinnati (UC) invites applications for up to two (2) open-rank tenure-track/tenured faculty positions with a 9-month academic appointment at the Assistant or Associate Professor level. All areas of aerospace engineering will be considered. The department is currently looking to expand its offerings in the following two broad areas:

  1. Space robotics and autonomy, astrodynamics, and spacecraft guidance, navigation and control (GNC).
  2. Computational fluid dynamics and physics-informed/-enhanced machine-learning modeling relevant to aerospace engineering applications, and especially in the area of computations related to high-speed propulsion.

Rank, tenure, salary and startup funding will be commensurate with the candidate's credentials and research plan.

Essential Functions

  • Teach graduate and undergraduate engineering courses offered in the department specific to their specialty area(s), as noted above, online and/or in a traditional classroom setting including but not limited to Computational Fluid Dynamics, senior capstone design courses, Compressible Flows, high temperature gas dynamics, Astrodynamics, Aerodynamics, Spacecraft Dynamics and Control.
  • Advise graduate and undergraduate students
  • Develop externally funded research programs
  • Conduct research in their specialty area(s) and publish research results in professional journals
  • Participate in professional service activities such as editorial review, student career mentoring, advising student organizations, serving on departmental, college and university committees, and performing outreach activities
  • Participate in curriculum and course development
  • Collaborate with faculty members in the relevant research clusters to develop nationally recognized research programs

Minimum Requirements

Prior to the effective date of appointment, a PhD in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or another closely related field.
